Dues go towards legal support, Co-Pilot, Professional Liability Insurance and other NEA benefits (see becoming a member).

Yes, they are expensive. However, without the union, you are an at will employee. That means the district can let you go without a reason even if you signed a contract. The cost of dues is worth the protection of having a union on your side when something happens.
